Vitamin C is one of the most familiar nutrients in health care, yet its full physiological importance is often underestimated. Also known as ascorbic acid, vitamin C is an essential, water-soluble vitamin that humans cannot produce internally. We must obtain it through food or supplementation.

Vitamin C is one of our favorite vitamins because it supports several systems that active adults, families, and patients recovering from injury depend upon every day. It participates in immune defense, collagen synthesis, wound healing, antioxidant protection, iron absorption, and connective-tissue maintenance.

The body possesses an inherent capacity to heal. That internal capacity depends on adequate nutrients, healthy circulation, appropriate nervous-system regulation, quality sleep, movement, and removal of external stressors. Vitamin C does not replace medical care or rehabilitation, but it provides essential biochemical support for the tissues that allow the body to repair and function.

What Is Vitamin C?

Vitamin C is a water-soluble antioxidant and biological cofactor. It exists primarily as ascorbic acid and its oxidized form, dehydroascorbic acid.

Unlike fat-soluble vitamins, vitamin C is not stored extensively in the body. The kidneys help regulate vitamin C levels, and excess amounts are eliminated through urine. This makes regular dietary intake important.

Vitamin C is frequently promoted as a guaranteed way to prevent the common cold. Research does not support that claim for the general, well-nourished population. Regular supplementation does not reliably prevent colds, although studies show that it may modestly reduce cold duration or symptom severity in some people. The practical conclusion is straightforward: vitamin C supports normal immune function, but it is not a substitute for vaccination, sleep, medical evaluation, or treatment of infection.

Vitamin C acts as a required cofactor for the enzymes that hydroxylate proline and lysine during collagen synthesis. This process stabilizes the collagen triple helix and allows connective tissue to maintain its mechanical strength.

However, more iron is not always better. People with hereditary hemochromatosis or other iron-overload disorders should not begin high-dose vitamin C supplementation without physician supervision.

A supplement may be appropriate when dietary intake is consistently low, food variety is significantly restricted, a clinician identifies inadequate vitamin C status, malabsorption is present, or nutritional needs are increased under medical supervision. Ascorbic acid is the most common supplemental form, and its bioavailability is comparable to naturally occurring vitamin C in foods.

Can You Take Too Much Vitamin C?

Vitamin C has relatively low toxicity, but high supplemental doses can exceed the body's ability to absorb it efficiently. Above approximately 1,000 mg per day, absorption decreases substantially, and more unabsorbed vitamin C remains in the intestinal tract.

High-dose vitamin C may also increase urinary oxalate and uric acid. Individuals with a history of kidney stones, kidney disease, or hyperoxaluria should consult a physician before using high-dose supplements. People with hereditary hemochromatosis or another iron-overload disorder should also use caution. Individuals with G6PD deficiency should avoid self-directed megadose protocols, particularly intravenous vitamin C.
